While some manufacturers conduct this inspection in-house, we’ve chosen to partner with certified third-party providers to perform dye penetrant testing offsite to critical AWS, AS9100, Client, and Nadcap requirements. What is Dye Penetrant Inspection? 

Dye penetrant inspection is a well-established NDT method used to detect surface discontinuities such as cracks, porosity, laps, and seams in non-porous materials. The process is based on capillary action—where a low-viscosity liquid penetrant is drawn into surface-breaking defects. After appropriate dwell time, the excess penetrant is removed, and a developer is applied. This draws trapped penetrant back to the surface, forming visible indications under ultraviolet or white light depending on the system used (fluorescent or visible dye). 

The Standard Dye Penetrant Process 

When performed at a qualified third-party facility, dye penetrant inspection typically involves the following standardized steps: 

  1. Pre-cleaning: Components are thoroughly cleaned to remove grease, oil, scale, or other contaminants that could block the penetrant from entering defects. 
  1. Penetrant Application: The part is either immersed in or sprayed with the penetrant, which is allowed to dwell for a specified period to seep into any surface flaws. 
  1. Excess Penetrant Removal: Surfaces are carefully cleaned to remove excess penetrant without disturbing the material trapped in flaws. 
  1. Developer Application: A developer—typically a powder, solvent, or water-based material—is applied to draw out the penetrant trapped in defects, creating a contrasting background for easier visual interpretation. 
  1. Inspection: Trained technicians inspect the part under appropriate lighting conditions, identifying and recording any indications that exceed acceptance criteria. 
  1. Post-cleaning: After inspection, parts are cleaned again to remove developer and penetrant residue, ensuring they are ready for further processing or service. 

This method is widely used on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, making it a versatile and cost-effective inspection option.
